Research Project: Action Area No.2(AA2)- Greenhouse Gas Research Network-Animal Housing Emissions NWISRL

Location: Northwest Irrigation and Soils Research

Project Number: 2054-12000-013-012-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Feb 23, 2024
End Date: Aug 31, 2031

Objective:
1. Quantify baseline emissions of methane, nitrous oxide, and ammonia from lagoon system in the Western US. 2. Quantify reduction in emissions of methane, nitrous oxide, and ammonia utilizing acidification as a mitigation strategy. 3. Evaluate the effect of solid/liquid separation system on flow of VS to the lagoon and estimate effects on emissions of methane, nitrous oxide and ammonia. Quantify any emissions coming from storage/treatment of separated solids. 4. Quantify emissions of ammonia, methane and nitrous oxide from composting dairy manure and evaluate the effect of different management practices on these emissions.

Approach:
Research will focus on quantifying real-time emissions of greenhouse gases (methane and nitrous oxide) and ammonia from manure lagoon systems and composting of manure. Gas concentrations will be determined utilizing open path FTIR in conjunction with detailed weather data (3D anemometry) and inverse dispersion modeling to estimate emissions. Research will account for the animal production and manure management practices, seasonal effects, and regional environmental conditions. A suite of ancillary data will be collected and analyzed. Examples include weather (wind direction and velocity in 3D, temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation), manure, feed, drinking water, animal numbers and milk production.
