Research Project: Livestock Nutrient Management Research Unit, Bushland, Texas, contribution to Enteric Methane Monitoring - Midwest Area

Location: Livestock Nutrient Management Research

Project Number: 3090-31630-006-055-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Feb 27, 2024
End Date: Aug 31, 2028

Objective:
We aim to investigate enteric methane mitigation strategies for beef finishing systems. We further aim to provide data towards the NRCS enteric methane modeling efforts.

Approach:
We have proposed 7 experimental trials to be conducted from FY24 through FY31. The specific experiments may be subject to change as research over this period evolves and enteric methane mitigation option become available. In all experiments, we will use an automated head chamber system to measure methane and carbon dioxide emissions and oxygen consumption. In each experiment, 54 steers will be individually fed in their own feed bunks that only allow one animal to gain access at a time.
