Research Project: Improving Dryland Agricultural Crops, Practices, and Data Utilization

Location: Water Management and Systems Research

Project Number: 3012-13660-010-033-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2024
End Date: Apr 30, 2027

Objective:
Long-term goals of this cooperative research project between USDA-ARS and Cooperator address the broad issue of dryland agricultural production in the semi-arid Great Plains: 1. Evaluate potential alternative crops for introduction into wheat-based dryland rotation systems. 2. Develop precision management dryland agricultural practices incorporating the latest technology developments. 3. Compare yields, economic returns, and environmental impacts at plot to field to farm scales. 4. Develop novel integrated pest management strategies for dryland pests.

Approach:
The Cooperator and USDA-ARS scientists will work closely together to design research and conduct field experiments, collect and analyze data, and develop models to better understand crop production in dryland agricultural systems.
