Research Project: Environmental Modeling for Enhanced Broiler House Design, Construction, and Operation to Improve Energy and Water Use Efficiency

Location: Poultry Research

Project Number: 6064-32630-010-005-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2024
End Date: Jul 31, 2029

Objective:
The goal of this research is to evaluate extreme weather event frequency and impact on housing design requirements for U.S. broiler producing regions. Specific objectives include: (1) Characterize extreme weather event frequency and impact on poultry production facilities; and (2) Conduct research on broiler house environmental control strategies for energy and water conservation.

Approach:
The goal of this research is to Evaluate extreme weather event frequency and impact on housing design requirements for U.S. broiler producing regions. The results of this cooperative research will enhance building design, construction, and operation for broiler houses and the US poultry industry as a whole. Severe weather event data will be sourced and analyzed to determine risk profiles for severe weather events with potential to disrupt broiler production in areas with high production density. These data will be used to evaluate current design and construction practices and subsequent effects on energy and water usage requirements and efficiencies. Building thermal models will be used to evaluate alternative construction practices which may enhance building systems resiliency during periods of severe weather events.
