Research Project: Superior Hops and Resilient Hop Production Systems Development

Location: Forage Seed and Cereal Research Unit

Project Number: 2072-21000-061-012-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2024
End Date: Oct 31, 2025

Objective:
1. Develop new, segregating populations for various traits of interest in hop. 2. Evaluate in replicated trials, make selections, and expand selected genotypes via propagation. 3. Determine the transmissibility of important viruses and viroids via sexual reproduction in hops.

Approach:
Hop plant material will be propagated in a misting greenhouse. Rooted cuttings will be used for transplanting and evaluation in the field. Leaf tissue, pollen, seeds, and progeny plantlets from males and females will be provided in the annual crossing scheme for virus and viroid testing. Plant materials from at least ten crosses will be tested. Viruses and viroids present in each of the various plant samples will be identified and quantified. Data will be analyzed and results interpreted for use and publication.
