Research Project: Multi-modal Imaging for Monitoring Plant Health and Crop Growth Remotely in Spacecraft

Location: Environmental Microbial & Food Safety Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-42000-021-017-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 26, 2024
End Date: Aug 25, 2029

Objective:
ARS and NASA Kennedy Space Center (KSC) will conduct collaborative research to develop a multi-modal imaging system for monitoring plant health and crop growth remotely in spacecraft such as international space station, Gateway, and Deep Space Transport. The imager will be used to collect relevant spectral data for developing suitable vegetation indices, machine learning algorithms, and AI for monitoring plant health and crop growth rates with minimal crew time.

Approach:
In this collaborative research, ARS and NASA KSC will jointly develop and test the multi-modal imaging system as detailed in the attached MOU.
