Research Project: Development of Biological Control Tools to Manage Insect Vector Borne Plant Pathogens

Location: Emerging Pests and Pathogens Research

Project Number: 8062-22410-007-062-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2024
End Date: Jul 31, 2025

Objective:
Cornell University (Cooperator) and the Agricultural Research Service ARS desire to enter into this Agreement for the purpose of collaborating on research to be carried out at ARS and Cooperator facilities focused on developing biological control tactics to control insect vector borne pathogens infecting crops that are vital to the US agricultural economy.

Approach:
Research will focus on testing: 1. Whether Symbiont technology can prevent citrus infection with huanglongbing, 2. Improvements in molecule export from the Symbiont, 3. Delivery of dsRNAs from Symbionts, and 4. Exploration of the use of insect pathogens to deliver molecules that block pathogen transmission.
