Research Project: Establishment of Microbial Probiotics in SIT-Reared Medfly

Location: Tropical Pest Genetics and Molecular Biology Research Unit

Project Number: 2040-22430-028-041-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2024
End Date: Sep 29, 2025

Objective:
The overarching goal of this project is to develop methods for mass inoculation of bacterial cultures and products to medfly in pre-release windows following pupal production. In this study, we will specifically investigate the impacts of fly rearing density alongside microbial inoculation titers to determine the efficiency of establishment and associated fly behaviors.

Approach:
1) Conduct experiments to determine how variation in bacterial concentration impact establishment of targeted isolates 2) Perform experiments to determine how fly rearing density impacts bacterial establishment, 3) Evaluate fly preference to inoculated and un-inoculated diets.
