Research Project: Improving Genomic Evaluations of Dairy Cattle Using New Data and More Efficient Computations

Location: Animal Genomics and Improvement Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-31000-113-010-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2018
End Date: Sep 30, 2024

Objective:
Improve genomic evaluations provided to the U.S. dairy industry by the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding through NEA research to improve efficiency of genomic prediction and computation by developing faster algorithms, testing new adjustments and models, and accounting for genomic pre-selection in evaluation.

Approach:
Cooperator funding will be used to support travel of NEA collaborators to international meetings where advanced procedures for genomic evaluation are presented, purchase and maintain computer hardware and software substantially similar to that used by Collaborator for routine national evaluations in order to minimize time needed to port algorithms and software from NEA to Cooperator systems, generate additional whole-genome sequence data, and acquire data on novel traits of economic interest to the U.S. dairy industry.
