Interpretive Summary: "Desi" type chickpeas are well adapted to the dry land regions of the U.S. Pacific Northwest. However, the available varieties are susceptible to ascochyta blight. In addition, they are relatively low yielding and have small seed size. In the development of Myles' chickpea, we identified germplasm with excellent resistance to ascochyta blight and with good yields and seed quality. The variety is especially adapted to the Palouse region of the U.S. Pacific Northwest. Seed of this new variety has been made available to producers.

Technical Abstract: Myles' chickpea was developed for it's resistance to ascochyta blight and high yields. The selection (ICCX860047BP20HB-B) which led to the development of Myles was provided by the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics in 1990. The selection was screened in the ascochyta blight screening nursery in 1991 and 1992 and tested in yield dtrials in 1992 and 1993 in the Palouse region. Based on excellent resistance to blight and excellent yields and quality, the selection was released in 1994. The cultivar is a "Desi" type with small angular seeds that are pigmented. The cultivar is expected to replace Sarah' which is susceptible to blight and has relatively poor yields by comparision. Small samples of seed of Myles for research purposes will be provided on request.
