These isolates were assayed for production of compounds antagonistic to SCN and root-knot nematode (RKN; Meloidogyne incognita). To conduct the assays, the fungi were cultured in potato dextrose broth, fungal biomass was removed, and nematode eggs were placed in the culture broths. Mobility of hatched second-stage juveniles (J2) and numbers of hatched eggs were then recorded. Of the 250 culture broths, four suppressed egg hatch of SCN by 80% or more compared to controls, and 15 suppressed RKN egg hatch by that amount. J2 mobility was inhibited in few of these culture broths. Active compounds are being isolated from culture broths of Fusarium equiseti and a second fungal species. |
