When using supercritical fluid extraction on food matrices containing lipid material, supercritical carbon dioxide has the tendency to extract an excessive amount of lipid matter in addition to target analytes. By utilizing binary mixtures of supercritical fluids, we have shown previously that trace levels of pesticides can be isolated with minimal lipid contamination. In this research, we extended our study to incorporate several classes of pesticides ranging from non-polar chlorinated species to more polar types, such as organophosphorus and pesticides. Binary fluid mixtures utilized for extraction cleanup of spiked and incurred residues include carbon dioxide with nitrogen and carbon dioxide trifluoromenthane ioxide. Optimal pressure and temperatures as well as binary fluid composition were determined for various classes of pesticides in terms of average analyte recoveries. This has permitted assessment of the applicability of the binary fluid approach in terms of multiresidue analysis. |
