Classification schemes for these molds are based on a few "key" morphological characters. We have used DNA sequences of the nuclear encoded small subunit 18S and large subunit 28S ribosomal RNA genes, translation elongation factor EF-1alpha, and actin to investigate phylogenetic relationships among and within all 1 currently recognized mucoralean families and 55 genera. Parsimony gene trees strongly support clades that are generally inconsistent with current classification of these fungi. Morphological evolution was investigated by optimizing the "key" characters on the gene trees to reassess character homology within the context of the molecular phylogenies. |
