Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The focus of this book is not on the ideal transport system that occurs in the laboratory but on environmental systems using either environmental engineering treatment processes or natural systems. This aspect makes this book a unique contribution to the field. There are 15 chapters in this book and each contains a detailed mathematical treatment of the transport processes in natural systems. The author provides a rigorous amount of mathematics that not only show the processes but also the derivation needed to arrive at the end result. The first chapter of this volume is an excellent summary of the rationale for the development of simplifications that are applicable to environmental systems. At the end of the chapter is a series of problems that are relevant to problems encountered by environmental engineers and are excellent thought problems that relate the principles to application. The next five chapters build upon the transport processes and develop an information base that is useful and thought-provoking. These chapters provide a sound basis for understanding mass transfer. There are not an abundance of references for each chapter but a sufficient number that provide supportive information for the applications shown within the chapter. This volume is highly recommended for the advanced individual who wants to model the transport processes in environmental systems and will probably be most valuable as a reference book since there are probably few courses on this subject matter in the United States. It is a good addition to libraries, both personal and university, to cover the subject of transport processes in natural environments.
