Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Since 1990, the Nutrition Information Service at the Children's Nutrition Research Center,(CNRC/ NIS) has translated scientific-based nutrition findings for consumers to improve dietary patterns and health in children. This presentation highlights the CNRC/NIS's process in the development of the Nutrition Information Database (NID)as a resource in the dissemination of effective nutrition information covering the whole life cycle. Traditionally requests were received via mail or telephone from parents/caretakers concerned primarily with children's nutrition.Presently, with the rapidly changing health care environment and increased utilization of the Internet, consumer e-mail requests are spanning the entire life cycle. Requests are becoming increasingly complex and diverse. The CNRC/NIS has compiled from multiple, reliable sources, nutrition information for use in responding to today's varied inquiries. CNRC/NIS professionals use this database to locate and retrieve specific informatio to develop science-based responses on a variety of current relevant topics. The CNRC/NIS additionally provides nutrition information in a quarterly newsletter, "Nutrition and Your Child;" a monthly column, "Kid's Nutrition Q & A;" radio, television, and media interviews; and the CNRC web site . Collectively, these approaches enable the CNRC/NIS to provide high-quality, contextual nutrition information to consumers.
