Technical Abstract: The growth and development of the root system is under genetic control but may be modified by the environment. This newsletter describes the development of the structure of the cotton root system and the importance of genetic changes in the structure that impact plant growth and productivity. The influence of environmental factors such as soil temperature and soil strength on root development is also discussed. It is anticipated that this information may be utilized by producers in developing management strategies for improved crop performance and productivity by improving the health of the root system.
