Interpretive Summary: Dry edible beans in the "small red" market class are an important crop in the U.S Pacific Northwest. Bean production in the region is moving toward double cropping systems. A rapid-maturing small red cultivar is needed for second crop following an early-season crop like peas. Existing small red cultivars available to growers in the region are late- maturing and exhibit severe lodging. We developed an early season small red cultivar 'LeBaron' with reduced lodging and virus resistance that is compatible as a second crop in double-cropping systems in the region. The earliness and disease resistance of LeBaron has already attracted growers in Washington, Idaho, Colorado, Oregon, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota and Canada. Early seed sales indicate that this cultivar will have a positive impact on dry bean production.

Technical Abstract: LeBaron is very early maturing, making it valuable as a second crop following peas or other early season harvested crops in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. It has a growth habit which varies from upright (Type IIa) to floppy (Type IIIa). LeBaron carries the single recessive bc-12 gene for resistance to bean common mosaic virus (BMMV) and also exhibits resistance to curly top virus. The canning quality of LeBaron was the same as Rufus and NW-63, the two commercial standard varieties for small red bean. Variety protection has been applied for under the Plant Variety Protection Act, Public Law 91-577, 84 Stat 1542-1559 with the option that LeBaron may be sold for seed by name only under the certified class.
