Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A region near the centromere of barley chromosome 1 was identified as containing overlapping QTL for malt extract (ME), diastatic power (DP), alpha-amylase (AA), malt beta-glucan (MBG), malt beta-glucanase (MBGase), and dormancy (DOR) from 'Steptoe'/'Morex'. This region is flanked by Brz and Amy2 loci 27 cM apart. To find the number of genes, linkage and pleiotropic effects, fine structure mapping was undertaken by developing marker assisted backcross derived isogenic lines. Barley-rice synteny provided a source of many new markers. Eight recombinants within the target region were grown in field trials. Comparing additive effects among the eight isogenic lines, two QTL each for ME, AA, and DP were resolved into 1-8 cM fragments. In 1998 and 1999, 31 additional isogenic lines were grown in the field at two locations. Malting quality data will help resolve QTL locations even further.
