Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The genes and gene products that determine seed coat color in P. vulgaris L. have been the subject of debate and research since early in this century. Seed coat color in bean is controlled by alleles at eight Mendelian loci: P, C, D, J, G, B, V, and Rk. A number of genetic stocks that varied in dominance and recessivity at one or more loci were developed dand the chemistry of seed coat compounds determined. Four flavonol glycosides and three anthocyanins have been isolated, identified and quantified in the different seed coat color genotypes. These results have helped illuminate structural and regulatory genes in the biosynthetic pathway determining seed coat color for common bean. The evolution of P. vulgaris seed coat color genes in relation to those of other plant species is discussed.
