Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Experimental results on the deformation and the critical breakup conditions of a single polyphosphate (P) glass fiber in a medium under simple shear flows are reported. The experiments were conducted using an optical shearing system and an imbedded-fiber retraction apparatus. The critical shear rate was determined by imposing successive small changes in shear rate from lower to higher values until the P-glass fiber breakup into droplets was observed. The results indicate that the fiber resistance to deformation and breakup is strongly dependent on the P-glass composition, surface tension, and viscosity ratio. A useful empirical relation was used to quantify the contribution of the fiber deformation and surface tension. This relation is expected to be useful in understanding and controlling morphology development in organic-inorganic P-glass hybrid systems.
