Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Thisresearchfocusedonthemechanical, structuralandthermalproperties of injection molded composites of granular cornstarch, poly(D,L-lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(hydroxyester-ethers) (PHEE). These composites had high tensile strengths (40-50 MPa) at starch loadings up to 70% by weight. SEM micrographs of fractured specimens revealed good adhesion of starch to the polymer matrix, as evidenced by broken starch granules. The addition of PHEE resin to starch/PLA crystallization will also be presented. This research was conducted under CRADA 58-3K95-8-0634 between the Agricultural Research Service and the Biotechnology Research and Development Corporation.
