Interpretive Summary: Despite considerable progress in understanding the systematics of plant pathogenic fungi, the identification and classification of some groups of fungi is still difficult. This is particularly true for members of the complex genus Fusarium. A new species of Fusarium was discovered in New Zealand that causes small cankers on living hardwood trees. The sexual state of this fungus was found to belong to Cosmospora. Both the sexual and asexual states of this fungal species are described and illustrated. This work will be used by plant pathologists and extension agents who seek to identify, characterize, and control this fungus as well as by plant quarantine officials who work to prevent the introduction of this exotic organism into the United States.

Technical Abstract: Nectria zealandica is transferred to the genus Cosmospora. This species is redescribed and its anamorph, Fusarium zealandicum, is described as new and both are illustrated. The systematic position of Cosmospora zealandica and its anamorph is discussed.
