Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A large group of researchers and personnel representing several agencies is working to update the Ohio drainage guide. This resource, last revised in 1973,is a source of information for Ohio's drainage contractors, NRCS and SWCD technicians, and others. Computer modeling is being used to derive spacing recommendations for over 475 soils found in Ohio. In order to validate this work, and provide a knowledge base for the development of improved contractor training, a survey of Ohio drainage contractors was conducted to inventory contractor practices and estimate the extent of subsurface drainage installation from 1995-1997. The contractors were asked to report the amount of drain pipe installed, resources used to design systems, the depth and spacing typically used for various soils, and other questions. Respondents reported the installation of over 10,000 km of drain pipe in 1997. This paper summarizes the survey findings, and compares drain depth and spacing values reported by contractors for severa Ohio soils to depth and spacing values obtained by modeling.
