Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Four outbreaks from 1992 through 1996 of Pasteurella multocida septicaemia among fallow deer in a Danish deer park were studied. P. multocida subsp. multocida was cultured from internal tissues of 257 animals. Isolates from succumbed animals and healthy carriers were all found to belong to serotype B:3,4. One single pattern, which differed from that of isolates from other rsources, was observed by ribotyping and pulsed filed gel electrophoresis. On restriction endonuclease analysis (REA) using HhaI, the isolates had the same profile identical to the profile of an isolate which originated from fallow deer in the United Kingdom (P-4675). On REA using HpaII, the Danish fallow deer isolates had the same profile, which differed at 2 band positions from the profile of the United Kingdom fallow deer isolate. Our findings suggest that a unique clone of P. multocida, closely related to a strain isolated from fallow deer in the United Kingdom, was responsible for rthe outbreak of haemorrhagic septicaemia among Danish fallow deer.
