Interpretive Summary: Biologically based control of insect pests is cost effective, permanent, and allow farmers to reduce the amount of chemical pesticides used on crops. Many of the most successful biocontrol agents used against pests are tiny parasitic wasps in the superfamily Chalcidoidea. These pages contain information on the family of chalcid wasps and summarize what is known of their diversity, taxonomy, and biology. Presented on the SEL World Wide Web site, this information will be available to anyone interested in these beneficial wasps. The information contained here will be of use to insect identifiers, scientists studying parasitic wasps, and workers in biological control programs.

Technical Abstract: Twenty families of Chalcidoidea (Hymenoptera) are reviewed and treated. Information on their biology, taxonomy, distribution, diversity, collecting, morphology and other information is summarized. Intended for distribution via the world wide web, this information will be linked to a detailed bibliography and to other information on the order Hymenoptera.
