An automated apparatus is used to solvent extract ground fish tissue and the resulting extract is cleaned-up on an aminopropyl silica (APS) extraction cartridge. With no further sample preparation, nonylphenol is quantitated using a normal phase HPLC, APS Hypersil column, with fluorescence detection. The major advantage of this technique is the elimination of the conventional gel-permeation step, a lengthy clean-up procedure designed to remove lipids. Representative fish from clean sites and contaminated sites were analyzed for nonylphenol. Lake trout hatchery reared fish and yellow perch from Milwaukee Bay ranged from 30 to 200 nonylphenol ng/g wet weight. |
