Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Growth chamber experiments were conducted to evaluate foliar absorption and translocation of glyphosate and sulfosate in roundup Ultra (RU) and Touchdown 5 (TD) formulations on velvetleaf and giant foxtail. Absorption of 14C-glyphosate in RU or TD formulations increased over the time period (72h). In velvetleaf, absorption of 14C-glyphosate in both formulations reached 26% of applied at 72 hours after treatment (HAT). At 72 HAT, absorption of 14C-glyphosate in RU and TD was 43% for giant foxtail. Addition of 1% AMS in both formulations increased herbicide absorption. Absorption of 14C-glyphosate in RU or TD formulations was 35% at 72 HAT. For giant foxtail, 59 and 60% were absorbed at 72 HAT, respectively. At 72 HAT, translocation of absorbed 14C-glyphosate in both formulations (with or without AMS) was greater for giant foxtail than velvetleaf. For velvetleaf, 17% of absorbed 14C-glyphosate (without AMS) in RU or TD was translocated from the treated leaf. With AMS added, the amount translocated was 25 and 23% for RU and TD, respectively. The majority of 14C-glyphosate translocated was found above the treated leaf. For giant foxtail, 37% of absorbed 14C-glyphosate in RU or TD formulations was translocated out of the treated leaf. This amount reached 2% of absorbed 14C-glyphosate when 1% of AMS was added to both formulations. In giant foxtail, the majority of 14C-glyphosate translocated from the treated leaf was found in tissues below the treated leaf. In both weed species no significant difference was found between RU and TD.
