Interpretive Summary: The history of the work with Russian honey bees is reviewed to establish the research context of the decision to release Russian honey bees to the beekeeping industry. The release process itself is reviewed as are various characteristics of Russian honey bees that are incidental to the main selection program. The report is designed to inform beekeepers about the underlying details of the release of Russian honey bees.

Technical Abstract: Past work with Russian honey bees relating to their discovery, importation, quarantine, and testing are reviewed. The decision and process of releasing Russian honey bees to industry are reviewed. Various beekeeping characteristics of Russian honey bees that were not specifically studied via data collection processes are reported, such as their tendency to use very little propolis. The report informs beekeepers about the underlying details of the release of Russian honey bees.
