Randomly selected, symptomatic leaf tissues were assayed by surface disinfesting and plating on water agar. Six species of Exserohilum, Bipolaris, and Curvularia were detected among colonies from leaves. Some significant differences in frequency of species occurred between the two sampling dates. B. cynodontis and E. rostratum were among the most common species at both sites and both sampling dates. B. hawaiiensis was identified from bermudagrass for the first time in Mississippi. In inoculation experiments at similar spore concentrations, its virulence on leaves and stems of bermudagrass was comparable to that of B. spicifera and less than that of B. cynodontis. Results indicate that species of dematiaceous fungal pathogens of bermudagrass on poultry waste application sites are generally similar to those previously observed on swine sites. |
