Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A more virulent NL-3 strain of bean common mosaic necrosis virus (BCMNV) was identified recently in the greenhouse laboratory at Kimberly, ID. The strain, designated NL-3(K) to acknowledge identification at Kimberly, derives from the common NL-3(D) strain that was shipped from Prosser, WA by Dr. M.J. Silbernagel to Dr. R.L. Forster for routine screening of breeding lines at Kimberly in 1990. The '(D)' indicates that the common NL-3 strai originates from Drijfhout. Both NL-3 and NL-3(K) gave the same final reaction across the host group differentials expected for Pathogroup (PG) VI strains, except that NL-3(K) was more virulent because it caused earlier onset of symptoms and ultimately more severe symptoms in certain differentials in comparison to NL-3(D). As an example of virulence differences, we maintain NL-3(K) on Sutter Pink because it usually kills Dubbele Witte, whereas NL-3(D) can be maintained in either host. Serological tests also support that NL-3(K) is a PG VI strain of BCMNV. Perhaps NL-3(K) arose from NL-3(D) through a mutation or hybridization event with another strain.
