Technical Abstract: Soybean cyst nematode (SCN), Heterodera glycines, is a serious pest of soybean throughout soybean production areas in the United States. The nematode causes an annual production loss of $407 million. Control of the nematode involves crop rotation and planting of soybean varieties resistant to the nematode. The cooperative efforts of the USDA/ARS nematology program at Urbana and the University of Illinois soybean breeding program seek ongoing improvement in resistance to the nematode and higher yield. The variety Loda incorporates resistance from PI88788 originally obtained from China. Loda has high to moderate resistance to SCN races that occur in the midwest and higher yield compared to other varieties of similar maturity.
