The early (FL 98 Early Bulk), intermediate ( Gulf'), and late ( Marshall') maturing entries were harvested every other week from 1 March to 1 June in 1999 and 2000. Plant samples were dried, weighed, and evaluated for P concentration and uptake. Phosphorus concentration generally decreased over time in 1999, being greatest at 1 March and least 1 June. Marshall had lower P concentration than FL 98 and Gulf at 1 March and greater P concentration than Gulf at 1 June. Phosphorus uptake increased over time in 1999, peaking at complete maturity of the entries. Marshall had greater P uptake than Gulf at 19 May and than FL98 and Gulf at 1 June. No other differences between entries were observed for P concentration or uptake in 1999. Farmers should harvest annual ryegrass at complete maturity to maximize P uptake from soils fertilized with swine effluent. |
