Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Whole soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] seed cell wall polysaccharide (CWP) content is on average about 160 g/kg dry matter. Seed CWP content exhibits genotypic and environmental variation and is negatively correlated with the sum of seed protein and oil (Stombaugh et. al., Crop Sci 40:408-412). Lowering seed CWP may result in increased protein and oil content. The objective of this study was to investigate quantitative trait loci (QTL) controlling seed CWP content. Recombinant inbred lines (RILs) from a Minsoy x Archer population (Orf et. al., Crop Sci 39:1642-1651) were grown in Waseca, MN, during the summer of 1997. Seed from the RILs were analyzed for CWP sugars using the Uppsala total dietary fiber method to determine QTLs. The Minsoy x Archer CWP data also were used for further development of preliminary near-infrared reflectance (NIR) equations for CWP sugars. The equations were used to extend the QTL analysis to other years and RIL populations. Understanding the genetic control of seed CWP content and developing CWP NIR equations will aid breeding efforts for lowering seed CWP.
