Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Soil quality indicators reflect both inherent (pedogenic) and dynamic (management related) surface and profile conditions. A controlled study was initiated in a two-story rhizotron to compare soil quality indicator response for Cecil, Palouse, Weld, and Miami soils from GA, WA, CO, and IN, respectively, to tilled and non-tilled surface management. Precrop hydrology (saturated hydraulic conductivity, pore volume, tracer movement) and response of some soil quality indicators (particulate organic matter, bulk density, pH) after initial wheat and grain sorghum cycle will be presented. Comparisons of crop quality within the four soil types will also be discussed. The primary impact of this controlled environment study will be to provide NRCS, land owners and operators, and consultants with information regarding how different soils respond to tilled and non-tilled surface soil management, when placed under the same cropping sequence and controlled, known temperature and moisture conditions.
