Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Vine decline, collapse or sudden wilt are terms to describe cucurbit diseases where the most obvious symptom is a nonvascular wilt of the plant as the first fruits approach maturity. Among the diverse etiological agents implicated in this syndrome, the soilborne fungus Acremonium cucurbitacearum Alfaro-Garcia, W. Gams and Garcia-Jimenez caused great economical losses in Spanish muskmelon crops during the last two decades. Recently, this plant pathogen has been detected also in muskmelon growing areas of California and Texas, producing the same disease. Studies on different aspects of this new plant pathogen are carring out in our laboratories with the purpose to find an integrated control of the acremonium melon collapse. RAPD polymorphism and vegetative compatibility group variation among Spanish isolates of A. cucurbitacearum have been achieved in previous studies. The purpose of this work is to ascertain by means of RAPD markers the relationships among a collection of A. cucurbitacearum isolates collected in muskmelon fields in California and Texas states and muskmelon, watermelon and cucumber fields from diverse Spanish region.
