He has contributed to our knowledge of flow behavior in pipes and open channels, to development of flow measurement techniques and instrumentation, to the understanding of artesian wells, and of course he is the author of Darcy's Law, the law that describes water flow through soil. To celebrate the 200th anniversary of Darcy and to draw appropriate recognition to Darcy's work, a task committee is planning a specialty symposium to be held during the Hydraulics and Water Resources Conference of the Environmental and Water Resources Institute, Orlando, FL in 2003. The symposium aims at publishing information on the history of research and engineering in the field of water resources, including related biographical accounts. This paper outlines the purpose of the Task Committee, gives a brief biography of Darcy, provides background on the symposium, lists a tentative schedule of activities, and solicits members to join the task committee and to contribute paper for the symposium.
