A new species of Hypocrea was discovered in Costa Rica that has an unusual gliocladium-like asexual state. In this paper the previously unknown species, H. nigrovirens, is described and illustrated in both its sexual and asexual states. A key for the identification of this and similar species is provided. This work will be used by plant pathologists who are searching for fungi that can be used in the biological control of plant diseases. Technical Abstract: Hypocrea nigrovirens, a new species with a gliocladium-like anamorph, was collected on the Atlantic coast of Costa Rica. This species is recognized by dark green, almost black stroma, warts around the ostiolar opening, conspicuously thickened ascus tip and large conidia formed on gliocladium- like conidiophores. |
