Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The number of manuscripts submitted for publication in Crop Science continues to increase while finding volunteers to review and handle these manuscripts as editors and reviewers becomes more difficult. Objectives of this presentation are 1) to provide authors an overview of technical editors' expectations in a manuscript and 2) to outline the job of technical editor. The technical editor for the C1 and C8 divisions is the first person to read manuscripts submitted to these divisions. In this initial review, major items checed are manuscript format and subject matter. Format instructions can be found in the following four materials - Instructions to Authors, Guide for Revising Manuscripts, Checklist and Sample Abstract, and Guidelines for References. If the technical editor finds the manuscript acceptable based on format and subject matter, the manuscript then is sent to an associate editor to handle the scientific review. The technical editor makes the final decision for acceptance or release of the manuscript based on the associate editor's and reviewers' recommendations and other materials such as the author's response to reviewers' comments and the revised manuscript. As a result of this symposium, we hope to improve the quality of manuscripts, receive feedback from authors on how editors can better serve authors, and inspire more members to volunteer as editors and reviewers.
