Technical Abstract: This publication (book) represents the revised edition of this work originally published in 1993. This new edition has over a dozen new species, many new photographs, plant keys, and extensively revised taxonomy. It contains color photographs, the family names, scientific names, and ecological characteristics of trees, shrubs, and cacti that occur in southern Texas. Plant keys are provided for the families, genera and species covered. Plants represented are of importance to wildlife, livestock, and man, and the reasons or characteristics of their importance are emphasized. This work focuses on plants that occur in southern Texas, but the extensive ranges of many of the represented species make it a useful reference for plants of other areas of Texas, the southwestern United States, and northern Mexico. Some 201 species and 60 families are represented, including 22 species of cacti and 179 species of trees, shrubs, and subshrubs. Most of the plants represented are native to the region, but some introduced species are also included. This publication will be useful to ranchers and range managers, natural resource and wildlife management personnel, scientists, and anyone interested in the flora of southern Texas. It will enable one to identify many of the woody plant and cacti species in this region. Information provided on the ecological characteristics of the plants represented will be useful to help develop sound land management.
