Interpretive Summary: Insect cell culture is a technique used in a wide variety of research applications and as a tool for making products in several areas of biotechnology. As such, the field has made important contributions to insect science. A brief history of the field is presented as well as an overview of how the technique is used in physiology, pathology and medicine. This paper is to be published as part of a large one-volume work intended to provide a comprehensive, scientifically sophisticated overview of insect science to an audience of college students in the sciences and college-educated non-scientists with interest in insects.
