Interpretive Summary: The family Tephritidae (fruit flies) includes numerous pests of fruits and vegetables, in the U.S. (e.g., apple maggot) and worldwide (e.g., the Mediterranean, South American, and Oriental fruit flies). Other species are beneficial as biological control agents of weedy plants, including more than a dozen species released in the United States for this purpose. The first key to finding or communicating knowledge about a particular fruit fly species is to know its valid scientific name. This database of all of the valid and invalid names for the 4,352 species or subspecies and 481 genera of fruit flies recognized as of December 1999 updates the most recent version which covered up to December 1996. Fields for higher classification (subfamily, tribe, subtribe) were added for all species and genus records, of which 2,003 were added or otherwise significantly updated. An additional 597 records were added to the literature database. This information, provided on CD\ROM, will promote fruit fly research throughout the world and will help regulatory agencies like APHIS\PPQ to make quarantine decisions regarding exotic fruit fly pests. Technical Abstract: combinations; and Xenodarella Munro is considered an incorrect original spelling of Xenodorella Munro, 1967, by present revision (the former name was misspelled in the Fruit Fly Expert Identification System and Systematic Information Database). It is noted that the name Tephritis connexa Wang 1996 is a junior primary homonym of Tephritis connexa Macquart, 1835. To update the information in the BDWD pertaining to Tephritidae as of December 1999, new records (273 species, 25 generic, and 597 literature) were created and others (1487 species, 218 generic) were modified to reflect changes such as new synonymies, new combinations, or new distribution data. There are now a total of 6,189 species and 1021 generic records in the database for the 4,352 valid species or subspecies and 481 valid genera of fruit flies as of December 1999. Fields for higher classification (subfamily, tribe, subtribe) also were added for all specie and genus records. These records are incorporated in the Biosystematic Database of World Diptera and not in a separate database; see the instructions for the BDWD to access them. Only a few nomenclatural acts are made in this database, as follows: Trupanea pamirense (Belanovskij) and Chetostoma caucasica (Bigot) are new combinations; and Xenodarella Munro is considered an incorrect original spelling of Xenodorella Munro, 1967, by present revision (the former name was misspelled in the Fruit Fly Expert Identification System and Systematic Information Database). It is noted that the name Tephritis connexa Wang 1996 is a junior primary homonym of Tephritis connexa Macquart, 1835. |
