The complete sequence corresponding to the coding region of the MT gene has been deduced from the cDNA. The predicted protein (from the DNA sequence) is comprised of 63 amino acids and shows complete or near complete sequence identity with other avian MT proteins including chicken, duck, pigeon, pheasant and quail. Turkey MT protein shows approximately 68% sequence identity with various mammalian MT proteins. Turkey MT, like all other reported MT proteins contains an unusually high proportion (20 residues, 30%) of the amino acid, cysteine. The sequence data we report will be useful in studying expression of the metallothionein gene in turkeys and determining its role in metal metabolism and stress. |
