A "cultivar" is a cultivated variety of a plant. In the pecan industry, cultivars are propagated by grafting. It is important to have reliable records that tell where and when the trees used in our orchards began to be grafted, and how those trees originated. That type of information helps us sunderstand patterns of performance in the trees, and influences where and how we use certain cultivars. There may be arguments over the correct name of some cultivars. For others, there may be disagreements over parentage. The information in this paper may help settle some of those disagreements. By maintaining careful records for new cultivars, we can insure that future workers have the information they need. Pecan cultivars listed in this paper are described on the basis of their origin, nut shape, nut size, percentage kernel, patterns of bloom, and patterns of tree performance such has resistance to important diseases. Technical Abstract: This document provides information on four pecan cultivars. Major cultivars are included as well as less well known cultivars that may be used as parents in breeding. For each entry, history of origin is presented chronologically, with brief but important details concerning dates, locations, and individuals responsible. Nuts characters are described using standard descriptors of nut shape and quality. Patterns o phenology and performance are provided. |
