Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Cuphea is a new oilseed crop that can be grown throughout the Midwest. Cuphea is grown for short-chain fatty acids which are used in the formation of soaps and detergents. Our lab has successfully planted 1/3 of an acre and harvested the seeds using older John Deere equipment. Modifications to the equipment were made to plant and harvest the seed since the plant has some interesting characteristics which will be discussed. There will be discussion on other new crops with which we are currently working, including meadowfoam, crambe, jojoba, kenaf, and milkweed.
