Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Trace elements are being measured in hair as a putative aid in the diagnosis of nutritional deficiency or environmental intoxication to evaluate partially the utility of hair analysis in clinical and experimental medicine. We measured lead in 54 samples of hair collected from healthy middle-aged man over two decades. Lead in his hair decreased gradually beginning in 1980 and reached very low levels by 1996. We have detected the gradual elimination of lead in gasoline because the elimination was 90% complete.
