Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This editorial summarizes the current state of the field of insect neuropeptides and prospects for the future. It provides an introduction to a special issue of the international journal Peptides dedicated to Invertebrate Neuropeptides in which Ronald J. Nachman of ARS serves as guest editor. The issue covers recent advances in the search for novel neuropeptide sequences, the definition of physiological roles for neuropeptides, synergy between neuropeptides, tissue-specific localization of neuropeptide expression and storage, neuropeptide processing, the relationship between neuropeptides and invertebrate behavior, and in silico data mining approaches to the search for putative peptide precursor genes and receptors. Also discussed are advances in the development of neuropeptide-based, environmentally-friendly insect pest management strategies.
