Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Avian leukosis virus (ALV) and reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV) are the most common naturally occurring retroviruses associated with neoplastic diseases in domesticated poultry. In addition to causing tumors and other production problems, both ALV and REV are potential contaminants of live-virus vaccines of poultry. ALV infection of chickens is widespread and known to be of significant economic importance; economic losses due to ALV-induced tumors and reduced productivity are estimated to be in millions of U.S. dollars each year. On the other hand, although REV is infrequently diagnosed, it is widespread, and has not emerged as an important economic disease problem. This overview is focused on subgroup J ALV infection in meat-type chickens.
