Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: In 1999, 66 vegetative white clover, Trifolium repens L., collections were made in eastern Kentucky, eastern Ohio, West Virginia, and western Virginia. Thirty plants from each collection were planted in replicated plots, ten plants per plot, at the Alderson, WV, Plant Materials Center. 'Regal' and 'Sacramento' were included for comparison. Plants were evaluated in 2000 for leaf size, canopy height, plant spread, pest damage, stolon density, and flowering. Variation within and among collections was extensive. Not only did collections differ, but some of that variation was associated with the different areas within the Central Appalachian Region from which the collections originated. Collections differed also in the amount of variability within them. Five broad-based white clover populations, selected primarily for leaf size (3 populations), stolon density, and density of flowers and secondarily for other characters were developed. Seed were produced in 2001.
