DISCHARGE OF SEDIMENTS AND PLANNING. CD-ROM. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON LAND DEGRADATION. 2001. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Sediments discharge coming from agricultural areas in large watersheds has a negative impact on water quality of rivers and on sedimentation of dams existent in the watershed. A methodology to measure the sediment discharge and to promote the conservation planning in a large watershed will be presented in two segments. The first segment consists on monitoring of the current sediment discharge into rivers and dams using modern techniques and equipment for measurements in significant locations of the watershed. The second segment of this methodology consists on modeling, in the entire watershed, using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) and a Geographic Information System (GIS) in order to select critical areas with high discharge of sediments for protection. The areas selected as a high risk will be analyzed to verify the quantity and the specific reason of the problem, and further will be addressed to integrated conservation programs in order to reduce the erosion problem. |
