Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The effect of chemical stress on biomarker enzymes has been well investigated. Potassium permanganate (KmNO4) has historically been used as a disease therapeutant in aquaculture, however, little is known about enzyme response in relation to therapeutic treatments. In the present study, the effect of KmNO4 on biomarker response is elucidated. Channel catfish were exposed to KmNO4 at the recommended therapeutic dose (1X) and to 3- and 5-times (3X and 5X) the therapeutic dose via a peristaltic pump continuously for 36 hrs. Samples were taken every 12 hrs for the first 48 hrs, and 48 hr intervals thereafter for the remainder of the 14-day experiment. The preliminary results of EROD analyses indicate an increase in Cytochrome P4501A activity in a typical dose-response effect beginning 12 hrs after initiation of the study. Activity peaked at 48 to 96 hrs and diminished through the remainder of the study. Control EROD levels were elevated during the initial sampling periods, this may have been due to human activity during these sampling periods. The 5X treatment had a 2.7-fold increase in activity over the control at 96 hrs. Future studies will be designed to identify other factors that may influence the time-course of this delayed response.
